Michelle Hickman lives in Gloucestershire and creates wool sculptures under the name of Furzie.  

 

The sculptures are made by a technique called needle felting, using only wool and special needles. Although it has its roots in a centuries old form of cloth making, needle-felting is a relatively new art, an off-shoot of industrial felt-making from the nineteenth century.  The woollen fibres are bonded together using felting needles to form a material which can be made into 3-D shapes.

Furzie sculptures have been sold all over the world, with commissions to replicate people’s pets being particularly popular.  

 

Michelle started teaching others the craft four years ago, holding regular workshops at venues across the country.  She has now taught over 1500 people.

​

Needle-felting is a fascinating experience, watching creations taking a life and form of their own as you work.  It is a very intuitive and tactile craft.  Tools required are few and the materials relatively inexpensive. The work can be picked up and put down at a moment’s notice, and can be carried out almost anywhere. 

 

Workshops are held in a very relaxed atmosphere - it’s been said that the laughs are as good as the course!

FURZIE Wool Sculpture

Learn to needle-felt and make a model of an animal of your choice from wool on a wire armature, approximately six inches in height.

The workshop runs from 10am to 4.30pm - the cost is £105 and includes all materials, lunch and refreshments - there is an option to purchase felting needles, tools and wool after the workshop.
