Oil painting for beginners with Mark Fennell RBSA


This course is aimed at artists who want to try oil painting for the first time and improvers.


Mark will demonstrate and guide you through his simple structured approach to the basics of oil painting.


This course is suitable for beginners and improvers and includes lots of one to one tuition on the building blocks of using oil paint including advice on how to set yourself up at home with the right brushes, paints and oil painting mediums.


Mark will start the course with a quick demonstration followed by practical exercises for tackling a simple still life subject with the basics of understanding colour, tone and composition.


The workshop will begin with a brief introduction and demonstration, followed by basic colour theory, colour mixing with oils and exploring different brush techniques.


Mark is very hands on, so there will be lots of one on one help if you need it!


What to bring


  • Two pre primed canvases or canvas boards.
  • A selection of short flat long handled hog paint brushes in a range of sizes from 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10, also a small round hog brush size 1.
  • Brushes must be hog bristle or synthetic and hog mix, suitable for oil painting and not water colour/sable brushes.
  • Palette knifes Winsor and newton sizes 20 and 22 or similar.
  • Zest it low odour thinners or similar and linseed oil and a dipper pot.
  • Good size flat mixing palette.
  • Oil colours as follows - titanium white, cadmium yellow, yellow ochre
  • cadmium red, alizarine crimson, burnt sienna, french ultramarine.
  • A good size jar and low odour thinners/white spirit, plenty of cloths or tissues to clean brushes.
