Drawing and painting was an obsession throughout Ruth Buchanan's childhood and are still the main part of her daily life, along with her passion for horses.
Born in London and raised in Northampton, Ruth has been based in Yorkshire since completing her bachelor’s degree. Following a career in Graphic Design & Illustration, where she specialised in paintings of historical architecture and small still lifes, she then taught for five years at 'A' and diploma levels. Ruth has worked as a Professional artist since 2001, producing studies of architecture and figurative work as well as her paintings of horses. Whilst she mainly paints in watercolour, she has also produced oil paintings and mixed media works.
Ruth is a studio holder with East Street Arts at Patrick Studios in Leeds. She is a Signature Member of The Institute of Equine Artists, a Member of the International Watercolour Society (England), a committee member of the Association of Animal Artists and was promoted to Full Member of The Society of Equestrian Artists in 2016.
Ruth’s watercolour paintings have been selected as one of fifteen artists to represent England in the International ‘Aquarello in Fabriano’ exhibition in the famous paper making town in Italy in the past five consecutive years. Ruth also exhibits at International Horse Events as well as in galleries in London, the rest of the UK and in Europe. Her paintings can be found in corporate collections as well as in the private collections of notable names in the arts and equestrian spheres both at home and abroad. She has won National and International awards for painting, drawing and for her sketchbooks.
In the past few years, Ruth has been encouraged by her (now sadly missed) mentor, Les Packham, to demonstrate her painting and drawing techniques, and to teach workshops. She has taught in the UK and the USA, and writes articles for National art magazines. Her own studies continue with portrait painter, Andres Jaroslavsky and she has also studied with American painters Thomas Schaller (architecture in watercolour) and Stephen Quilller (watermedia and colour theory).
